And if we’re really looking at the chart, it almost seems more likely that your game will sell better if it’s M instead of Teen. If the charts have taught us anything, being part of a hit franchise is a good indicator of big sales, with the rating not really being a factor at all. I highly doubt this will do much of anything to Arkham’s sales, which is why the news is more or less being shrugged off by the developer. I’m guessing they didn't just start writing f-words into the script, or animating sex scenes between Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle, so my guess is that the violence simply escalates to a point where it can’t be glossed over. Without its PG-13, it’s unlikely it would be the fourth highest grossing film of all-time today.Īrkham has always been teetering close to the “mature” edge, but I have to wonder what finally pushed them over, and the new rating makes Arkham Knight all the more intriguing.

And between Harley Quinn, Catwoman and Poison Ivy all getting uber-sexy costume redesigns, it’s not as if the game avoids “mature themes” in that regard entirely either.Īctually, the series is reminiscent of The Dark Knight, a bleak, incredibly violent movie that danced around an R-rating by showing little blood and keeping its language and sexual content to a minimum. The overall atmosphere is quite dark, with the Joker as scary as he’s ever been, and the Scarecrow sequences enough to give anyone nightmares. Though there’s no gore or outright nudity in the Arkham series, Batman’s brawls with henchmen are often incredibly violent, and even without bloodshed, it’s easy to cringe at some of the bone-crunching sound effects. In fact, there isn't a single T-rated game in the list.īut like movies, the standards of where a line is drawn between T and M is fuzzy in the gaming industry, and frankly, it’s surprising that Arkham is only just now landing an M.

M-rated games are routinely best-sellers, and comparatively seven out of the top 25 highest selling video games of all time are rated M, all split between Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty titles, with the non-M games mostly coming from Gaming is a much different story, with rating hardly seeming to matter at all.
